The first phase of Old-Túr River’s rehabilitation was completed three years ago.  The program had to be developed due to the endowments of the Túr’s catchment area, because it makes the river’s average water yield extremely divided. During the summer periods, when there is water shortage, the system is not able to improve the Old-Túr’s water balance and it is unable to satisfy the nationally important tourist and ecological needs for the river mouth’s overflow weir at the same time.

The point of the Old-Túr’s rehabilitation is that by reconstructing the existing structures, by building a new swelling storage plant and by changing the current operating system at the damming place, the water level can be raised by 80 cm. As a result, the water flow added at Sonkád can flow down at a higher level. The implementation of the project does not only have water protection, but also immense water management and ideological and aesthetic values, as well.
Phase I was started in June 2011, and was completed by the end of May 2012 involving a total of 16 locations. At these locations, there were engineering structure and basin reconstructions and new regulatory structures were built, and 4 new monitoring stations were established.
The effects of the interventions did neither affect the water level’s raising of the upper section of Old-Túr (above the water mill in Túristvándi), nor the improvement of the water balance.
During the inland water periods, when the water delivery is paused, there are high water levels at the estuarine sections, while the riverbed at the upper section of the Old-Túr is fully drained in the absence of a catchment area. Along the Nagyar-Túr section and the upper section of the Old-Túr, dead-channels with high natural value are found (Malomszegi dead-channel, Túr- Erdei dead-channel, and the Kölcse-Túr branch with its 8.2 km length), whose water replenishment is not solved.
The compilation of the technical content to continue the rehabilitation the Old-Túr - in addition to the previously defined ideas of intervention – were helped by the operation and maintenance experiences of Phase I.

We plan to make the following interventions in Phase II of the rehabilitation:
• In the 52+500 and 58+700 km sections of the Old-Túr, constructing a submerged weir (floodgate, closing dike).
• In the 58+700 km section of the old-Túr, constructing a water level control floodgate (which is the same as the 8+160 km section of the Kölcse-Túr branch).
• At the barrage in Kölcse, construction of automatic water level monitoring stations (52+500 km section of the Old-Túr).
• Installation of automatic water level probes at the external water side of the Petőfi floodgate in Nagyar and Kövessy Győző floodgate in Olcsvaapáti.
• Renovation of the Túr-Erdei dead-channel regulatory floodgate at the 63+440 km section of the Old-Túr.
• River dredging in the outskirts of Sonkád, Kölcse, Túristvándi and Kisar, in a total of 1100 lm length.
